Gabriel Faure was a peer of Saint-Saens at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Faure was choirmaster and Saint-Saens was organist. As such, he had more administrative duties than Saint-Saens, and less time for composing. His works were generally not large works, like symphonies or organ concertos. However, Faure was the undisputed master of song. His works like 'Apres Un Reve' ('After A Dream') are amongst the most beautiful and haunting ever written, and highly spiritual. One gets a sense that here is a great man, who knew how to capture the hearts of men, and women.
